What’s the most interesting local custom you’ve encountered?

One of the most interesting local customs I have encountered is the culture of honor and respect among the Yoruba people, and Africans as a whole. From childhood, Yoruba children are intentionally taught how to respect elders through greetings, speech, and behavior. It is not treated as a social performance, but as a core value that shapes character and relationships.

What makes it powerful is that respect is seen as wisdom, not weakness. The way younger people greet elders, listen attentively, and value age and experience creates a strong sense of community and identity. In a world where many cultures are becoming increasingly individualistic, I find this deep culture of honor both meaningful and admirable.
